Privacy Policy
Effective 11 September 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what alif.social holds about you, what it never holds, and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written to comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, and it forms part of the Terms.
alif.social is operated by Junaid Bhura, a sole trader registered in Australia, ABN 66 289 467 186.
What we hold about you
We keep as little as we can. On our own servers we hold:
- Your handle: the name you chose when you joined. It is how you are shown, addressed, and linked to on alif.social.
- What you write and choose: your posts, replies, events, images, description, the mosques, listings, groups, and people you follow or belong to, the listings you run, your likes and attendance, your settings, and the dates you accepted the Terms.
- Your identity provider reference: an identifier issued by WorkOS that links your account to your sign-in. It is not your name or your email address.
- What running the service needs: server logs and error reports that may include your IP address and browser details for a short time, used only to keep the service working and secure.
What we never hold
- Your name and your email address: sign-in is handled by WorkOS, our identity provider. Your name, email address, and sign-in method are held by WorkOS, under its own privacy policy, and are never stored on our servers, never sent to us, and never logged. We cannot email you, and we never will.
- Your location: when a feature needs to know where you are, such as finding mosques or listings near you, your device asks your permission, the location is used for that request, and it is discarded. It is never stored.
- A photo of you: your avatar is drawn from your handle. Nothing is uploaded or stored for it.
- Your phone number, date of birth, or password: we never ask for them and have nowhere to put them.
- Advertising or tracking data: there are no advertisements on alif.social, no advertising identifiers, and no tracking beyond what is needed to run the service. We do not sell, rent, or share what we hold with anyone for marketing.
Who can see what you post
alif.social is for signed-in Members. Who can see what you post depends on where you post it and on the switches in your Settings, all of which start on and are yours to turn off. Your posts to your followers are seen by your followers; your posts in a group are seen by its members; your replies are seen by whoever can see the post. The handles of people attending an event are shown to whoever can see the event.
Who we share it with
We share what we hold only with the services that run alif.social, and only as much as they need:
- WorkOS (identity): holds your name, email address, and sign-in.
- Laravel Cloud (hosting): runs the servers and databases where what you write is held.
- Mapbox (maps): receives the map area you are looking at when a map is shown, not your identity.
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim (addresses): receives the address text you type when adding an event or listing.
Some of these services hold data outside Australia. Apart from these, we disclose what we hold only where Australian law requires it.
How long we keep it
What you write stays on alif.social until you delete it or delete your account. Server logs are kept for a short period and then discarded. When you delete your account, everything we hold about you is deleted after a thirty-day cooling-off period during which you may restore it; after that nothing survives.
Your rights
You may see and change what we hold about you at any time by signing in: your posts, your settings, and your account are all yours to edit or delete. You may also ask us for a copy of what we hold or for a correction by writing to the address below. We will respond within thirty days. If you are not satisfied with our response you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect what we hold from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access. Nothing on the internet is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee it.
Changes to this Policy
We may change this Policy. A change takes effect on the Effective Date shown at the top of this page. When the Effective Date changes, you will be shown what changed and asked to accept the new Policy the next time you visit. If you do not agree, you may delete your account at any time.
